Most people do not keep just one fish in a tank. Getting your feet wet with the chemistry and science of a tank plus adding some ecological elements can bring a very nice habitat for not one species of fish but for several depending on the size of your tank. I will be speaking about a generalized 20 gallon tank with guppy friendly fish, thus should be friends to other finish in this family. What you may want to look for whenever choosing a tank mate are the following:
- Tank size
- Size of fish
- Diet and water requirements
Some fish to consider buying are other fish that are in the same family as the guppy which include:
- Mollies
- Platies
- Swordtails
- Various Platy
Other smaller fish that are non aggressive are:
- Almost any Tetras
- Cory Catfish
- Loaches
- Most Plecos
- Barbs
- Hatchet Fish
Non-fish community fish:
- Freshwater snails
- Shrimps (Ghost and Cherry are popular)
- African Dwarf Frogs
